This beer is brewed with 100% Scottish peat smoked whisky malt. This malt generates an intense smokey flavor and aroma. In fact its intensity makes this beer almost undrinkable, unless you blend it with other ingredients. We recommend to use this product to give a balanced smoked note to foods and drinks as oysters, sauces, marinades, sausages, fatty fish, chocolate and dark beer. Improve your world by giving it a hint of smoke.

Anamorphic IPA
6% alc/vol 30 IBU 15°P
First brewed: xx.xx.xxxx Batch #****
Anamorphic IPA is a new age IPA brewed with copious amounts of oats and hopped aggressively with Galaxy, Citra and Motueka. We then distorted tradition and fermented this beer solely with a blend of Brettanomyces strains to further the fruity, tropical flavors and provide a subtle background of funk. Holding true to our uncompromising ideals, we brewed this bold and sticky IPA at our brewery in Grimstad and fermented it at our "wild beer" facility just across the river. Keep cold and drink fresh!

(Norwegian Home Brew championship winner 2009)
Andhrimnir is the chef of the Æsir and einherjat in Norse Mythology. Every day in Valhalla, he slaughters the beast Sæhrímnir and cooks it in Eldhrimnir, his cauldron. It is also the winner of Norwegian national championship for homebrewers. We at Nøgne Ø want to make this great barley wine available commercially, so beer drinkers will have an opportunity to experience the best Norwegian homebrew. Though made in Nøgne Ø brewery, this beer was brewed by its creator, Gahr Smith-Gahrsen.

Aurora Borealis
14.9% alc/vol
First brewed 20.09.2012 Batch #866
A collaboration brew from Bridge Road Brewers of Victoria and Nøgne Ø of Norway. This is the kind of beer that needs to be enjoyed in the right place at the right time and not necessarily on a Thursday evening watching the tennis. Why? Well, how many beers do you know with the sort of genesis enjoyed by the Aurora Borealis? Along with its sibling, the Aurora Australis, it has been months in the making, months that have seen two batches of a strong Belgian style Quadrupel brewed on either side of the world then packaged into wooden barrels and sent, unrefrigerated, over the seas from one hemisphere to the other. Along the way, a couple of these barrels have exploded too; making this a rare treat not to be taken lightly.
Brewed at Nøgne Ø, bottled at Bridge Road. Shipped to Australia in barrels previously used for whisky.

Nøgne Ø is proud to have created this beer in cooperation with Nordic Barista Cup. We wanted to make a coffee beer that was different and decided to use cascara, the dried husk from coffee bean, instead of roasted beans or actual coffee. A strong cascara tea was blended with the beer and, in addition, cascara was steeped directly in the finished beer. We hope you enjoy the result! The cascara used is from Aida Batlles farm, Los Alpes, in El Salvador and was donated by Solberg & Hansen.

Dark Horizon 1

First brewed 13.05.2006 Batch #243
*RETIRED
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.
This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration came from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.
All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 bottles of this brew.

There is so much fun involved in creating Dark Horizon. Once it ferments, everyone in the brewery are very enthusiastic and pay close attention. Is the yeast still active? Is everything OK? How does the flavours evolve? Dark Horizon is normally dark and velvety. Muscovado sugars provides good fruity aromas. The coffee is a chapter on its own. The green beans will first be treated alfa amylase, an enzyme brewers enjoy working with. Then we mash the green beans before drying and roasting them. This gives it the unique flavor Dark Horizon deserves. Share Dark Horizon with someone you think deserves it.

"Can you fill these empty barrels with something fun?" That was the challenge Kjetil presented me with over a coffee a stormy Tuesday morning in October."How about something strong and dark?" I wondered. "25% dark malts, 30% rye, 28 degres Plato."That’ll never work." said Kjetil. 1 kilo malts/L, 48 hours of brewing and 2 years on old Armanac barrels later, I feel free to say: "Well, wouldn’t you know... it worked".

Dragonwort Stout 2.ed
11% alc/vol 28 IBU/ 40 ºP
First brewed: 17.11.2014 Batch #: 1308
In 2012 Edvard was challenged to brew something strong and dark. He took on this challenge and brewed an enormous
imperial stout using 25% dark malt and 30% rye to be further aged on Armagnac barrels. The result was so luxurious that we simply had to brew it again! This 2016 edition of Dragonwort is the outstanding result of 48 hours of brewing, one kilo of malt per liter, and one year of maturation in bourbon barrels. Here at Nøgne Ø, we have a passion for bold and decadent stouts and this is certainly no exception!

Funky Geyser
5% alc/vol 30 IBU
First brewed 12.07.2011 Batch #821
*RETIRED
This beer is infected. Infected by a small single celled monster called Brettanomyces. This little buddy creates amazing funky flavours. Some think the aroma reminds them of a barn yard, others associate it with the smell of wet socks. The little critter is really motivated to work and ferments for months or years. This fermentation results in a high carbon dioxide pressure. So high in fact that the beer comes out of the bottle like a geyser. So make sure to have a glass at hand when you open this.

Let’s face it; Imperial stout and fresh whisky barrels- A match made in heaven! We have done it before, and we will do it again. There is something about how well balanced and smooth the roasted notes get with ageing.
In this one the whisky really comes through. Complimenting but not overshining the dark chocolate and vanilla notes. All our ales are unpasteurized and unfiltered which may give variations over time that takes the product in new directions both in taste and carbonation levels. Pour gently to not disturb the sediments. Best served at 12*C in front of a fireplace.

Utilizing the same recipe for our Vis Secret IPA, the brettanomyces has added an element of passionfruit and pineapple as well as a dryness that will have you begging for more. In true Nøgne Ø style, we have opted away from the norm and created something extraordinary. Enjoy fresh as this beer was not intended for cellaring. Pairs well with sharp cheese and good company! All of our beers are unpasturized and unfiltered which may lead to variations both in taste and carbonation levels.

Our own interpretation of a German wheat beer. Cloudy ale with a fruity sourness. We recommend that this be drunk with the yeast sediment. Good with seafood.

Wild Horizon
8% alc/vol 25 IBU 14.5
First brewed **.**.**** Batch #1312
Wild Horizon is a wheat ale that has been solely fermented with wild yeast and bacteria in oak barrels for 11 months on a farm just across the river from our brewery. Apricot was added to selected barrels and left to rest for an additional 4 weeks before being blended and bottled. The result is an expression of what the Horizon series means to us here at Nøgne Ø. An unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of what defines beer without ever compromising.

Advent is a season with mixed feelings for Norwegians. For starters it is all about getting ready for Christmas . Gorgeous! But it is also a season where it gets darker day by day. Which indeed is a challenge for every individual. This beer is supposed to balance both these emotions Let´s call it bitter sweet!

God Jul Islay Edition

First brewed 20.05.2009 Batch #428

Please be aware that this is not a subtle beer. If you are unable to appreciate the flavor of Islay Scotch whiskey, then this beer is certainly not for you. Three months of aging in fresh Islay whiskey barrels did this. Certainly great for whiskey lovers, but not necessarily for those is search of subtle and balanced flavors. The timid should look elsewhere! We love it though!

Pumpkin Ale is a nightmare to brew. The mash becomes impermeable and it takes forever to collect the wort from it. In this beer we used dried pumpkin. The run-off took 7 hours. We still enjoyed it, though.

Special Holiday Ale

Collaboration:
Stone Brewing Co, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales and Nøgne Ø
Special Holiday Ale was first brewed in San Diego in 2008. Each brew is following the same recipe, including Michigan chestnuts, white sage from southern California and Norwegian juniper berries, but differences in brewing and aging practices produce different beers. Cheers to being different! Skål!

Underlig Jul

The name of this beer is "Peculiar Christmas" in English. This spiced Christmas ale is strange - and indeed a fusion beer. We have gathered inspiration from the Norwegian drink “gløgg”, and as such this is quite an uncompromising brew. Best served with “goro” and “fattigmann”.
